Coming Home...
I gave out a little gift to everyone today - a note book with a special message inside along with a photo and a personal award. The notebook I hope, will be put to good use as the kids will hopefully keep writing this summer so not to get rusty.
As well, I prepared a grade 3 math review package. It does not need to come back however, the kids should take a stab at it this summer. Good luck! I'm sure all our hard work paid off.

POPCORN! POPCORN! GET YOUR POPCORN!
You may know that the grade threes were raising money this week to cover the cost of our bus to pioneer village.
Well, it was a great success. Three days of popcorn sales brought in enough to cover the cost and then some. The left over money will go towards a year end pizza party!

Homework
Everyone is asked to take a stab at writing an announcement for our upcoming fund raiser. We will be selling popcorn next week to pay for the bus that took us to pioneer village.
We will be making an announcement at the end of the day tomorrow to inform the school when the sales begin and how much the popcorn costs.

Plant Project update
As of the end of tomorrow, our posters will be complete! Yes, we are one week behind, thanks to our very short week, last week. We will start our presentations on Monday and will be finished by Thursday. Everyone will be taking their poster and notes home over the weekend to practice for their presentation. I will be doing a demonstration tomorrow on my plant of choice – Oregano so that everyone can get a sense of what is expected. Visuals are a great addition to any presentation. If students can get their hands on the plant or the medicine (or medicine container or box) derived from their plant, that would be wonderful. If not, that is ok too. Jot notes of what one plans to say during the presentation will be very helpful. Good Luck!
Homework Tonight...
In Math we have started to focus on Mass (weight). We are using grams and kilograms.
We know that grams are used to measure small items (less than 1kg) such as many foods, writing supplies, etc. Kilograms are used to measure bigger items (more than 1000g) such as a text books, people, animals, etc. Tonight's homework reflects this. This is due tomorrow.

What a fabulous day at Pioneer Village. A HUGE thank you goes out to all our parent volunteers who took time to join us...Brians dad -Matt, Marcus ' grandma - Mo, Alexias mom - Anna, and Jaylas dad, Jeremy. You were simply amazing!

Updates!
So, our sunflower plants were growing out of control, so we planted them in a better place and left them to do their thing! At least 10 have survived the transplant so far, many were lost to some serious foot (accidental) stomping.We will need some kind students who lives in the neighbourhood (Abby, Marcus, Irie, Rowan...to name a few)...to check up on our sunflowers regularly to ensure they are getting enough water.
Churning Butter was the highlight of our afternoon..it took about 10minutes of vigorous shaking of heavy cream to turn it from liquid to solid. It was actually very cool and SO easy! We enjoyed our homemade butter on some freshly warmed buns....mmm...good stuff!
Plant project - the beginning stage of our posters started today with the design of our titles. We will continue more tomorrow!
Short, But Busy Week! tomorrow marks what will be the last 'working' day of this week. Thursday is our trip to Pionner Village, and Friday is our Track and Field day - more details about that on Thursday.

We have begun looking at persuasive writing pieces in our language block. To start, we are focusing specifically on the media and how it's persuasive message influence people everywhere. Plant Project - PLEASE READ!
Last night I sent home a social studies/science project. All the instructions, rubrics and note taking sheets are included in the package. It is very important that we stick to timelines. Please check out the timelines on the back of the first page. The jot notes are due next Tuesday, May 12.
So far, many kids have approached me saying that are doing their project on the aloe vera plant.
Because so many of us are familiar with this healing plant, I think the kids are eager to report on it. In fact, I do not want 15 projects on the aloe plant. I'm am allowing only 1 person to do it and that will be Arjun as he was the first ask. Below is a list of the top 10 plants used for medicine. This is just a small list of plants. There are many more.

Used medicinally for thousands of years, today it is used in the treatment of sleeping disorders, autoimmune diseases and glaucoma.
Coca (Erythroxylon coca)
Cocaine was widely used as a local anaesthetic in the 19th century and coca leaf tea is taken for altitude sickness in South America.
Daffodil (Narcissus spp.)
Galantamine hydrobromide, a compound derived from daffodil bulbs, is being used to treat Alzheimer’s disease.
Deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna)
All parts of this plant, especially the berries, contain the extremely toxic chemical atropine. Atropine is used to relax the muscles of the eye and to stop muscular spasms.
English yew (Taxus baccata)
The leaves of this yew are used in the synthesis of compounds called taxols, which are used in the treatment of breast cancer.
Fever tree (Cinchona succiruba)
A native of Latin America, the bark of the fever tree produces quinine, which is used to treat malaria.
Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea)
Digitalis has been used since the 16th century to treat heart disease and its derivatives are still used in modern medicine.
Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum)
Opium derivatives such as morphine are still used as powerful painkillers in hospitals.
Rubbertree (Hevea brasiliensis)
From rubber gloves to waterproof sheeting and prophylactics, latex plays an important role in health care and medicine.
Willow (Salix spp.)
The bark of the white willow contains acetyl salicylic acid, commonly known as aspirin. It has been used for pain relief for 2,000 years.

Upcoming trip to Pioneer Village
We are in need of 4 parent volunteers for this trip. This is
so that our large group of 23 can be divided into smaller groups. Each group will need a parent
supervisor. The parent supervisor will
be required to take their small group around the village on a tour after (or
before) our hands on activity. Parent
supervisors will need to be able to guide and talk to the various buildings in
the village. Their entry fee will be
covered, however sadly, there will be not be enough room on the bus. Parent volunteers will be asked to make
their own way to Pioneer Village. If
you are interested please be sure to indicate on the permission form that you
are able to come. I will be in touch with you to discuss specifics in the coming weeks. Thank you so much in

Let's all go to the Theatre!
We have been invited to see a show at the Young Peoples Theatre in a couple weeks. The permission form in green is coming home today. Due date for fee and form is Wednesday, May 6.
Photosynthesis
Now that our plants are starting to grow, we had to figure out how they are going to continue to thrive. We did some comparisons between plants and animals and between humans and plants and discovered that we all need some of the same things. But what is interesting is that plants can't go around hunting for and gathering their food like animals and humans because they are anchored in place by their roots. It is fascinating to learn that plants make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. The video below goes into quite some depth. All we need to know are the basics:

EQAO INFO
Ok folks, it's time to get informed.
Although I have not been given an exact date for the test writing, I assume it will be during the last week of May or the first week in June. Stay tuned.
Our writing schedule will likely look something like this:
Tues - language am + language pm
Wed - Math - am only
Thurs - Language am + language pm
During the test week, there is no formal instruction time (except on the Monday).
Students are given long blocks of time to complete their books. Usually most finish in good time and once everyone is finished, we will have some peaceful time to play and relax.
Throughout the year, I have tied in sample test questions to each unit, specifically in math. As a result, the grade 3's have a good/clear understanding of the test question format and how they can achieve the various levels, 1-4.
Usually at this point in the year, I ask parents to help out a little by exposing their child a little more to the EQAO questions. Many years of booklets are available on-line as well as the scoring guides for each question. I've included a link below which will take parents to the page with tests from previous years. Once on the page, scroll down until you see the 'years' - They go as far back as 2009. After clicking on a year, look for the box that has released assessments questions.
