Family Literacy Day

January 27th is Family Literacy Day in Canada. On this day, Canadian families are encouraged to read together, play together, and plan to continue to learn as a family all year long. This special day was created in 1999 by ABC Life Literacy Canada (previously known as ABC CANADA), a charity that researches and promotes literacy in Canada. The theme for this year's Family Literacy Day is "Take the Learning Journey". One of the resources available on FamilyLiteracyDay.ca is a Journey to Learning Passport, which suggests activities you can do individually or as a family to practice everyday learning in the lead up to Family Literacy Day. On Monday, a letter and passport was sent home.  See below for the steps to follow:

1. Do some of the activities.
2. Write name and grade on passport cover.
3. Bring passport back to school.
4. Put passport in ballot box in library (or teachers can collect them in and bring to library as a set).

DEADLINE: Friday February 3rd

PRIZES ANNOUNCED: Monday February 6th.
PRIZES PER DIVISION:
  • 1 E-Reader
  • 1 $20 Gift card.
  • Books (popular, current, great books - some signed by authors)

Giving Back...

You may or may not know, that this year Clairlea is putting on a Fun Fair in May...a Christmas-Themed Fun Fair!  Our Parent Council has kindly asked for families to donate used or unused decorations for May 26th.   Our neighbours up at Eglington Square went through some changes last year and decided to replace all their decorations with new ones.  As a result, Clairlea has inherited all their old decorations and our grade 2's put together a big Thank You card!  I decided it would be best to deliver the card in person, so that's what we did.  We headed to the mall Tuesday after last recess and got to explore the unknown second floor!
Umar, Robert, Sara, Avri and Sarah put together a little presentation and as a thank you to us, the staff gave everyone a USB memory stick in the shape of a snowman!  How perfect and unexpected.  We later enjoyed timbits and good company, then made our way back to school.

Show N' Tell

Mia's Howler Monkey
This is my Howler Monkey.  I got it for Christmas last year from my Dad.  I brought it in because I like it a lot and because she has cute eyes. I've named my monkey Sugar Plum, just because I like the name.

Skylanders - By Theron
Yesterday I brought in my Skylanders for Show n' Tell.  They include Spyro, Trigger Happy, Gill Grunt and Porpal of Power.  I received these from my Mommy and Daddy this past Christmas Day.  They bought me the gift from Best Buy because they love me :)
This is a toy that hooks up to your gaming station and makes your characters come to life on the screen.

There is NO assigned homework tonight!

Math - Transformations - Flips, Slides and Turns

In Grade 3 math, we are learning about Transformations (the grade 2's are also being exposed to the concept).  Objects and shapes can move in a number of different ways, however we are focusing on Flips (Reflections), Slides (Translations) and Turns (Rotations). The words written in brackets are in fact the words the ministry would like the children to know.
Sometimes students get confused between flips, slides, and turns. Below are a few resources that might help your child better understand these concepts.

Battleship

We may have time on Friday to play some games.  Battleship has served as a useful way to enforce co-ordinates and movements on a grid.  If by chance you have the game Battleship at your home and are willing to send it in, please do so tomorrow!

Math Homework

We are about to wrap up movement and locations on a grid.  Tonight's homework, Jim's Movement on a Grid revolves around using the right terminology to move around a grid and following directions.  This activity will be due tomorrow.

Tonights Homework

This week we are working on movement of objects and shapes on a grid.  Some students did not finished their work in class and are bringing the activity home to finish.  In addition, there is a worksheet entitled Moving on a Grid and both are due tomorrow!

The grade 2's have also received a water cycle flow chart activity and this will be due Wednesday or Tomorrow.

Show N' Tell

 Roberts Sea Shell Collection
On Friday, Robert shared his shell collection. He has collected them himself over the last year - he has way more at home. The shells are mostly from Grand Cayman and Florida.  Robert collects shells because he likes to be reminded of his Family Trips.  He also likes the interesting shapes and colours.

David's Basketball Jersey
This jersey was given to David from his cousin Lance.  His cousin is a basketball player and when he grew out of it, gave it to David as a gift. David cherishes the jersey because he looks up to Lance and learns a lot about basketball from him.

Kamal's Leaf Jersey
Before the holidays, Kamal brought in his Leaf Jersey. It is an official jersey and it means a lot to him because the Toronto Maple Leafs are his favourite hockey team.  He received it as a gift from his parents.

Safwan's PS3 Games
After the holidays, Safwan brought in a few of his favourite video games.  He reveived them as gifts - 2 from a recent birthday and 2 for Christmas.  He received all from his family.

Math Test and spelling test

We will not be having our math test until Monday.  After doing some review work on measurement this afternoon, I'm not totally confident that they are all ready to write a test. I will do more review tomorrow and we will postpone the test until Monday.  The test will focus on measuring lengths, perimeter and area. There will also be temperature questions as well.
Our spelling test will take place tomorrow as usual.  This weeks words can be found on the blog. We did not get an opportunity to copy the words into our agendas on the last day of school, and students were asked to visit the blog over the winter break to get them from there.  You need to scroll down to Friday, Dec. 23 if this has not been done already.

Urban Planning Link

This is a site we used during computers today.  It gave students the opportunity to see what is involved when planning an urban community. If the link doesn't work, simply type in purely games urban planning into google's search bar.

Happy New Year to all and Welcome to 2012!

We are going to be spending a little bit of time this week focusing on temperature.  Today we discussed the following:
  • water boils at 100 degrees Celsius
  • water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius
  • our body temperature is about 37 degrees Celsius
  • room temperature is about 22 degrees Celsius
  • the inside of a fridge is about 7 degrees Celsius
  • a cold day is around -10 degrees Celsius
  • a hot day is around 30 degrees Celsius
Homework:  Reading a thermometer (note that the thermometers are in increments of 2)
There was also work that was to be completed in class and if it was not, then it was sent home.  These are both due back tomorrow.  Tuesday, Jan.10
