Ticket Draw Winners!
Fridays are our TICKET DRAW days! We draw 3 tickets each week and the winners get to choose 1 thing to do from the list below.
See the photos below from our winners from the last 3 weeks! Congrats guys…keep up the good work. For those families who may not know, tickets are award to students who are following procedures and instructions at school. They are also given out when homework is brought back on time or when someone is caught going out of their way to be kind, helpful or a friend. There is a lot of opportunity to rake in the tickets throughout the week and it is SO easy!

Mesopotamia Homework for the Grade 4's
A mapping assignment has been sent home with the grade fours. It is to be submitted on Wednesday, Jan. 22. The assignment revolves around Mesopotamia, an ancient civilization that we are beginning to study.
The link below is a place we will visit often for our key information. Please take some time to look through the different links and familiarize yourself with some of the history behind Mesopotamia.

Mode, Median, Range and Mean
As part of Data Management, we are learning about these concepts. See below for their meaning and an example for each.
Mode: in a set of data, it is the number that appears most often. It's the MOST popular number.
ex. 4, 5, 6, 4, 5, 4, 5, 4 Four is the number that appears most often. The mode is 4!
Median: when a set of data has been arranged from least to greatest, the median is the number in the middle.
ex. 2, 1, 6, 4, 3, 4, 5
arranged in order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6 four is the number in the middle and is therefore the median!
Range: in a set of data, the range is the difference between the largest and smallest number.
ex. 5, 3, 6, 8, 10, 2, 3
highest number minus the smallest number: 10-2=8 The range in this set of data is 8!
Mean: in a set of data , the mean is the average number.
ex. 4, 5, 6, 3, 1, 7, 3
add up all the numbers, and divide by the total number of addends
4+5+6+3+2=20 20/4=5 The mean is 5!
For tonights homework, grade 3's and 4's have only been asked to find the MEAN if they are looking to challenge themselves. This can be challenging without the use of a calculator.
Good Luck! This homework is due tomorrow!

Recount Writing - Language
This week we worked diligently on our recounts about either the Ice Storm or our Holidays. After reviewing the writing pieces, I am now aware that there are some gaps in the writing process itself and we will need to continue reviewing it. In order to be achieving level 3's and 4's in this area, it is important that students are following the recount writing outline that looks something like this:
A Level 4 Recount Writing Piece must have…
1) a good opening sentence that captures the audiences attention.
2) an appropriate amount of detail that allows the reader to put him/herself in the event of the writer.
3) events in proper order
4) transition words that connect one idea to the next.
5) a good closing sentence that adequately sums up the event.
I will be handing back the writing pieces tomorrow.

Friday: Spelling activities are due and Spelling Test
Scholastic Orders: Due back on January 23
Math Update…
This week we have started exploring Data Management in mathematics. Our focus has been on reading and interpreting tables and charts. Soon we will begin creating our own surveys and graphs!
In the mean time, here is a website that I absolutely LOVE! Extra practice will help you further understand the concept.
http://ca.ixl.com/math/
Once you reach this site you'll have to find your grade. Then you'll need to scroll to Data and Graphs. We are not creating graphs yet so click on the links that revolve around interpreting data/tables only. We will have an opportunity to visit this site again this Friday during computer class.
