Our help sessions went out with a big bang last Thursday as we celebrated what was to some, the end to our 3-month long session. Banana Splits and Ice Cream Sundaes proved to be a perfect reward for a job well done!

Important Updates and Reminders
- EQAO is off and running!! Our first morning of testing went well. Some were nervous, others excited, and it didn't turn out to be that bad after all.
- After spending what felt like our first true summer afternoon outdoors, I was reminded of one very important thing and that is how strong our sun is. We will be going outside for longer periods of time as we near the end of the school year. It is very important that you lather up your child with at least SPF50 or higher each morning. The number determines how long you can stay in the sun before you start to burn. Obviously, the higher the better. For example: If you can stay out in the sun 15 minutes before burning, using a sunscreen with an SPF of 10 would allow you to resist the burn for 10x longer, which equates to 150 minutes.

Sports Day!
I apologize for the late notice but tomorrow is another spirit day. The theme is SPORTS!
If you're reading this before Friday at 8:30, and your child has any sports attire at home, dress them in it!
Shirts, hats, scarves, mitts, ANYTHING! They can even paint their favourite teams logo on their face.

Practice Time!
We have begun practing for the end of the year performance. This year we have selected a piece from the Sound of Music -- So Long, Farewell....
You can find an actual clip from the film at the link below. The movie was filmed in 1965 so the picture is not very good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShOP5s7kBGY
I've also attached a link that takes you to the karaoke version of the song. Words light up on the screen and children are singing in the background.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpNzpC6GwRs&playnext=1&list=PL17D10C37C82BBDBE
I'm requesting that families allow their son or daughter the chance to practice the song in their free time. This will translate into more productive practice sessions during school hours. Thanks so much in helping make our performance a successful one!

Sorry...
Those little hand-help electronics (e.x. psp, gameboy, etc) have made their way back into room 203. I thought that perhaps after a few months, they have earned their way back, so I let it slide.
However, after a few days of observation, these little games have yet again proven to be a distraction and nothing more. Parents, please do not allow your child to bring their electronics to school. EQAO test writing week will be the only exception.

Multiplying is nothing for these grade 3's!! I had to let all the parents know that your children have done FABULOUSLY with their multiplication tables. I can tell everyone has been practicing at home and I must thank you for the tremendous work that has been done. I have never seen or heard of such enthusiasm and high success rate with this concept. I am very impressed and proud of everyone. Way to Go Guys, keep it up! (said as I wipe a tear from my eye)

PLEASE RETURN
A few weeks back, Spring photos were taken and complete packages were sent to each family.
The package of photos were not intended to be free. If you liked the pictures enough, you were expected to send in the $39 fee and keep the package. If you were dissatisfied with the photos, then you are expected to simply send them back to school. Please do either of the above ASAP.
On behalf of Lifetouch, Thanks a bunch!

2D and 3D Shapes
This is an awesome site!
This tool allows you to learn about various 2D shapes and geometric solids (3D shapes) and their properties. It is simple to follow and provides an excellent review. Please spend some time this week going through the interactive site with your child.

Important for Parents
I am so pleased with the number of students who bring back their homework on time and complete!
It really shows how involved the parents in this class really are. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have shown a real dedication to their child's learning and success this school year.
I have one request this week however, and that is for parents NOT to help with the homework.
The EQAO questions I've been sending home are coming back as level 4's! Although this is very impressive, and I know many students are capable of achieving these scores, it's not a true evaluation of the children's ability, if a parent has contributed thoughts, ideas or made corrections. During the testing, they will not be able to get any assistance from me. They will be required to do the best that they can, on their own. For this reason, I'm asking that parents not make any corrections or steer their child in the right direction this week. It sounds cruel, I know...especially if you see them going down the wrong path. The only assistance they can get from you is the reading component. You can read the story to them as well as any of the questions; that will especially help some of the more struggling readers.

Multiplication Math Link
The link below will take students to a site where they can begin practicing their multiplication facts.
On the right side of the site, there is a section called Let's Practice Multiplication. Here, there are a number of practice games to choose from. My suggestion is to start at the top and make your way down.

Funny Photos
So this is a funny story. At one time, my mom was a very small size 2. She was cleaning out her closet not too long ago and decided to toss a number of belts that no longer fit. So I brought them to school for the staff, but no one was interested. When some of the kids spotted the bag of belts, they thought they were the coolest thing. Go figure. So they put them on, and I snapped some photos so my mom could see people getting use out of her belts! Enjoy!
Spelling Homework - Due next Wednesday
Last week, I provided the class with science terms. This will be the only spelling list provided for this week.
Students are to define each word, as best as they can.
Use the online dicationary link below if a hard copy is not available in your home.

Peer Educators...Our Pioneer Presentations
The Grade 3's have been working long and hard on their pioneer research topics. After their research, each pair of students were required to become experts i n their area of study. Last week, students rotated through each group to learn a little something about the pioneer times.
It was quite an amazing site to see. When they were teachers, they took their role seriously, and likewise when they were the students. I'm very proud of their efforts!!
