Reminders...

A few things to remember...
Tomorrow is picture day!  Remember to dress your best.

As well, we have a spelling test and math test!

Unfinished math packages have come back home tonight. Those students who brought them in today had the opportunity to work through more questions. These will be due tomorrow. Spelling booklets should also come back with the completed spelling activity inside.

And one last thing, more Scholastic catelogues were sent home today.  Their due date is October 11th.

Grade 2 Cursive

The grade 2's showed an interest in the cursive writing that the grade 3's are currently doing.  I have provided the 2's with the letters we've done up to this point (l, e, i, t, h and b) and have suggested that they complete what they can in their free time.  This is by no way mandatory but will aid in their future success with cursive writing.  The sheets are in the homework section of their colourful folder and when complete, can be brought back to school.

Yellow Reading Log

Yesterday, both grades put together a reading log.  Here's how it works:

  • Ask your son or daughter to explain the various columns that need to be filled out and how.
  • Every entry needs a parents signature.
  • As sheets get filled up, I will give them a sticker on their folder.
  • There is a prize for every 10 sheets that get filled.
  • Also, students can help themselves to extra sheets kept in the classroom when the time comes.
  • the folder should come back and forth to school each day to record and books read while at school.
  • the lined paper is for words that are unclear and definitions.
(the grade 2's have a previous log from Mrs. Moledina's class.  They have been given the choice as to which to use)

Fall Leaves

Mme. Demeter is working on an art project with the kids and has kindly asked that everyone search for different leaves. The leaves need to be pressed between books to allow them to be flattened out by the next art period, which is next Tuesday.

Grade 2 and 3 Math Homework

Tonight a review math package has come home for both grades. I'm asking that students take the time to work the through the package over the next 2 days.  If unfinished, it can be brought to school tomorrow in case there is some time during the day to work through it. It will not be due back until Friday, at which time we will have a test.

Terry Fox Run

Wednesday is the Terry Fox run...make sure your son or daughter is coming to school prepared with running shoes and a t-shirt.  We will be doing the run at 10:00am.

Great Math Site

The grade 2's are to use the site below tonight as a review to patterning.  On Thursday, both grades we will have a test on patterning, and this will be a good review for the 2's.  Sadly, there is no equivalent site for the 3's, HOWEVER it wouldn't hurt for them to review the questions presented on this site as well.

Changes Are Coming...

I'd like to officially welcome Robert, Sara, Avri, Sarah and Umar to our class.  Starting Monday, we will be joined by Mrs. Moledina's students as we will become a grade 2/3 class! Letters explaining the situation have gone home today.  Please bring any questions or clarifications to the office or myself.

Math Homework - Due Thursday

Today we learned about 'equal expressions'.   For example:   8+7=5+__?__
In order to solve this problem, you need to find out what the left side amounts to   8 + 7 = 15.  Now, the right side has to also equal 15.  So, 5 + 10 = 15, now, both sides equal the same.

There are 6 question's assigned for tonight's homework.  They are written on a sheet of paper and in the coloured folder, but just in case you and your child cannot understand the numbers written, here they are below:

1) 6+5=17-?
2) 8+5=10+?
3) 20-10=3+?
4) 9+7=19-?
5)?+6=25-3
6)?+3=17-5

There is NO assigned homework tonight.  Just as a reminder, any unfinished work from the day may be sent home for completion that night.

Tomorrow, Scholastic book orders are due, and pizza lunch money is due on Thursday of this week.

I'm also in the midst of doing reading assessments.  As they are completed, a note will be sent home indicating your child's new and improved reading level.

Tonight there is patterning with numbers math homework.  All  have been guided through the instructions, so they should know what to do. There was also an unfinished math sheet that came home Friday with some students.  For those who were unable to finish it, you have one more night.  These two sheets will be corrected tomorrow!

Thanks!

I'd like to thank the families who came out to meet me on Curriculum Night.  Some important information was shared, so for those who were unable to attend, look in the parent notes pocket of the coloured folder tonight for some useful info.

New Spelling Words and homework

I've decided to give the new spelling words on Fridays, directly after the spelling test.  This will allow for more study time.  The homework will still be due next Friday and this week, the words are to be organized into alphabetical order.  (ABC order)

Spelling Words and Homework

The first list of words have been written in everyone's agenda today, pg. 27.  Yes, even those who are yet to pay the $6 for their agenda were given it today, trusting that they will be bringing it in this week.

This week's words are homophones - words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings (e.g., weight, wait).

The homework to go along with the words can be done in the little spelling workbook found in the "Spelling" pocket of the colourful folder.  This week, words are to be put into sentences and is due on Friday morning.  We did the first two together today (main, mane).

The spelling test will take place this Friday and every Friday to come unless there is a PA day, in which case the test will be written on the Thursday.

I hope this is clear...if there is any confusion or questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me!

Interesting People

Today we had the opportunity to share our mementos/special things with each other.  It was amazing to see and hear about all the great memories they bring back.  Everyone came to school prepared today, so many thanks goes out  to all the families who helped put together the bag of  "stuff".  Well done grade 3's!

Welcome!

Chavez is a new addition to our classroom today!  He comes from Oakridge Public School and has settled into his new class very well.  I'd like to thank all my students for helping him feel welcome and a very SPECIAL thank you goes out to Lyndsay who took time out of her recess to take Chavez on a tour of Clairlea.

Homework

Math homework has come home today and can be returned tomorrow or Friday.

In your Child's Bag...

Well, our first day came to an end just as fast as it started!  We had a great day and just based on my first impressions, we are going to have an unbelievable year.  :)
Tonight there are some things for you to look at inside your child's bag.  Ask your son or daughter to explain how the multi-pocket folder works. This folder goes home and must come back to school every single day.  Tonight you will find a timetable and a letter from the board in the teacher notes section.
Also, as promised, there is a large brown folder containing many forms which must be reviewed, signed and returned in the same folder as soon as possible.
And finally, to compliment a task we are doing in class, each child has been asked to bring in a family photo tomorrow or as soon as its possible.

Consider...

The agendas will be distributed in the first 2 weeks of school.  They cost $6 and serve as a useful communication tool between teachers and parents.  In my class, we will use the agenda to mark down important dates, homework and spelling words.  Parents can also chose to send me notes via the agenda.  Please consider purchasing one next week.

As well, on September 15th, Clairlea is hosting the Curriculum Night BBQ.  At this time, families will have an opportunity to celebrate the beginning of a wonderful year ahead. In addition, you will become more informed about the things that will be happening in our Grade 3 classroom.   Please consider coming...I hope to see many faces!
