Land use in Ontario

In social studies, we have been learning about different ways the land is put to use in Ontario.  The following nine are industries that we will be focusing on. Everyone must be familiar with them in preparation for a potential pop quiz next week!

Mystery Object - Writing Homework - Due Tomorrow

A Five Senses work sheet is coming home tonight along with a paper bag and a blue adjective sheet. The directions are clearly indicated. This is due tomorrow and will be presented to the class.  Students need to make sure that they have read over their work to ensure they can read it smoothly and effectively to their audience.

NOTE: 3-4 describing words in each box is all that is necessary...I failed to mention that today.

Social Studies

As most of you know, we have wrapped up a science unit on soils and are now focusing on a new Social Studies unit - Living and Working in Ontario.
Yesterday we started with another diagnostic to see what the class already knows.
It's great to see how many of us know that we live in the grade city of TORONTO...but it's disappointing to see how many think we live in the province of Canada.  There is definitely some review that will be necessary as we move on.
Today, we started by brainstorming in pairs what we need to survive. This was followed by discussing as a group, the difference between a WANT and a NEED.

I encourage all families to have daily discussion about what we talk about in class so to reinforce the concepts.

Reminders...

- Winter attire info letter on blue paper is coming home! Please get informed and be proactive!

- Book reviews are due tomorrow

- pizza orders are due Friday

- Scholastic orders are due soon! (I can't remember the date)

Math Homework - Due tomorrow

A one-sided sheet is coming home tonight.
A math vocabulary sheet is also coming home.  It is expected that the terms used to describe movements on the grid are spelled correctly.  The lined paper is where the questions are to be answered.

Tip: the last question (#3) is a bit tricky.  The steps given must be reversed to find the original starting point.  This was discussed at the end of the day, but not practiced.

Two tickets to everyone who brings their homework back tomorrow!

Awesomeness!!

New Math Unit

We started a new math unit today...Geometry.  For the next few weeks, we will be focusing on the following expectations:

  • - describe movement from one location to another using a grid map (e.g., to get from the swings to the sandbox, move three squares to the right and two squares down);
  • –  identify flips, slides, and turns, through investigation using concrete materials and physical motion, and name flips, slides, and turns as reflections, translations, and rotations (e.g., a slide to the right is a translation; a turn is a rotation);
  • –  complete and describe designs and pictures of images that have a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line of symmetry

    Today we started with a diagnostic (a little assessment that tells me what the students already know).  The class as a whole, will need a refresher ;)

    In the coming days there will be links to games to help reinforce the concepts above...feel free to visit them anytime throughout the unit for extra practice.

    Although we are starting a new unit, we will still be practicing addition and subtraction.  I will inform everyone when a formal test in Numeracy will take place. For now, we are still practicing and brushing up on our computation skills.

Yippee! One more day..

Today the class was split into groups and instructed to create a skit that showcases a particular concept we've learned in our Soils Unit. Because the class will need 2 days to practice, they will be writing their Test on Friday rather than Tomorrow.
Yes! One more day to study.

Spelling Lists

Everyone received a typed version of the new word list on Friday which I stapled to the spelling test.  Everyone was instructed to copy the words into their agenda...I trust this has been done. ;)
