Forest Valley Info

Our trip to Forest Valley is in 2 Days! This Thursday, we will make our way deep into the forest to explore the sugar bush and learn how Maple Syrup is made.  Mr.Blois and Mrs. Bessler have been selected as our parent volunteers.
The weather looks to be promising.  Five degrees, a little sun, and a possibility of some scattered showers (very unlikely).
Please remember the following:
- Warm winter jacket
- Winter boots are best
- Gloves and hats
- Sunglasses
- umbrella (not a necessity)
- Change of socks if boots leak
- A small snack or two that can fit in coat pocket
- Students DO NOT need to bring a lunch or a bag to Forest Valley as we will be roasting hotdogs over a fire.

Math Homework

Math homework for both grades is due tomorrow. (1 sheet)
Also, some students did not finish the math sheet from this afternoon.  This also came home tonight to be completed for tomorrow.

Math Homework

Adding Money Amounts
In tonight's homework, parents please ensure that your son/daughter is taking the time to work out their solutions. This is not simply a mental math activity.  I would like to see the process that he/she went through to find the total amount of money.  This is due tomorrow!

Math

A Data Management test was given this week and it has come home for signing.  Please review, sign and send back to school ASAP!
We are starting to focus on money.  Today we discussed the various coins and bills and worked on a word problem involving all the donations that came in today for the pancakes.  We raised $26.25 today!  Thanks to all who sent in a toonie or loonie.  As a school we raised almost $600!

Book Bags

I've decided to give the book bags with the new books inside on Fridays.  This way, everyone will have more time to work on the book and the review.  The homework will still be due next Friday.

Save it for a rainy day...

As you may or may not know, there are vending machines in our school that provide us with healthy beverage options.  However, these tiny little drinks are WAY over priced  ---  $1.50 for 200ml to be exact.
I strongly believe that they are a waste of money - 3 big gulps and they're are gone!  There are also big chocolate bars being sold by the grade 8's at school. These bars cost $3.00 and the money goes towards their end of year trip.  They have been given instructions not to sell to other students but it still happens.
Money in the hands of small children often gets lost, stolen, causes fights, and disruptions to the day.  Please be aware that unless you read something on the blog or receive a note from the school that there are fundraisers taking place, students are not to be coming to school with money of any denomination. When students are required to bring in money for a bake sale or what have you, you will know about it.

That being said, this Friday is our Annual Pancake Day. Two pancakes will be served to every child sometime Friday morning.  This is NOT breakfast and students need to remember this.  In addtion, a $2 donation will be greatfully accepted and put towards wonderful things for our school.  There will be a notice coming home this week to explain it more in detail.

Trip Money, Permision Forms and Parent Volunteers

Much thanks goes out to all who have sent in the money and forms on time!
There are still a couple out there who have not submitted the fee and form and this MUST be in by Wednesday.
There has been a big interest in the parent volunteer domain and unfortunately, there are only so many parents we can take. To be fair, I'd like to open up these spots to parents who have not had an opportunity to volunteer yet this year. I will let you know before the end of the week if you are one of the chosen.  Thanks so much for all the interest!

Both Grades - Reading Homework - book bags came home today (see instructions inside).  Please ensure you and your child are putting some time aside each night to read the book.  The worksheet and book are due back this Friday.
Lyndsay has misplaced her book bag and we think it may have been accidentally placed in someone's school bag. If you find the bag, please return it tomorrow!

Math Practice Game Site

We explored the site below this morning during Computers.  There was a big interest in many of the games and so due to popular demand, I've provided the link.  Have Fun!

Tough Love...learning the hard way.

As many of you may know, there are times of the year when our fields at Clairlea are very wet and/or muddy.  School-aged children are wise enough to know to stay away from the watery/muddy areas to avoid potential disasters.  Those who choose to play too close, take risks or are simply not pay attention to where they are walking, ultimately come into the school with soaking wet feet and or pants...and sometimes are wet from head to toe.  Accidents like these can be avoided if smarter choices are made.  That being said, those who make the silly choice, will no longer be allowed to call home.  A change of clothes should always remain in the school bag for these occurances.  Parents/Guardians will no longer be inconvenienced and called to the school to bring a change of clothes.  Wet children will have to suffer the consequences.

Avri's Cousins
This is Avri.  She brought in a picture of her new twin cousins.  Liam and Lucas were born on January 17th both weighing about 5lb each. Avri brought in the photos because she has been so excited for their arrival and wanted to share her excitement with the class.

 Lyndsay's Sea Shells
Lyndsay brought in some beautiful shells from Jamaica.  Lyndsay's parents went on vacation this year and brought back some beautiful things.  Take a look at that impressive start fish!!

Borrow a Book

Starting Tuesday, February 21, everyone will be coming home with a book and worksheet.  The instructions are kept inside the bag.  Here is what is says:
• Every Monday (or Tuesday if Monday is a holiday) students will receive a new book and worksheet.
• Students are to read the book alone and with/to an adult over 4 days.
• Students are encouraged to have meaningful discussions with their family members about the ideas presented in the book.
• Once students are satisfied with their understanding of the book, they will need to complete a follow-up activity.
• The book and the follow-up activity are to be returned every Friday (or Thursday if Friday is a holiday or PA day)

***Students who do not bring their books back by Friday, will not be able to exchange for a new one on the following Monday.***

Lunch Bins

Over the month of February, our class has volunteered our services to the school. Those students in our class who stay for lunch had the option of volunteering their time to lunch bin duty.  What is this you ask?

Well, every class (gr.1-6) has a bin in which they place their lunch bags in after eating.  The bins are lined up outside the gym and a different group of 9 students gather the bins up and return them to the proper classroom each day.  They've been given tools to make their jobs easier (trolleys) and had a 30 minute training session with Mr.Church.  They are doing a fantastic job, probably close the best group of lunch bin monitors the school has ever had! They will indeed be rewarded for their efforts and time at the end of the month.  Well done grade 2's and 3's...we are so lucky to have you!
