New Books and Pioneer Study Sheet

Today everyone was assigned a new book.  It will be due back in 2 weeks time.  That means the book and retell should be back by November 2nd.
As well, the pioneer study sheet is coming home along with the binder which contains notes we've taken so far.  The blue and red Pioneer book may also be useful in studying for the test but both binder and pioneer book MUST come back to school everyday.

Pioneer Homework - Due Friday!

Tonight, everyone is bringing home a green 8x14 sheet.  Part of it was completed during class time.  The rest is to be completed at home.  The information below will help with answering the questions and drawing the right pictures in the right seasons.  If the info below is not enough, students should be using the pioneer book they've brought home and can make use of other internet sites to help with their responses.

When the pioneers came to Canada, they were given a plot of free land.  In order to keep the land, they had to build a home and plant crops.  They also had to expand their crops every year. We have had many discussions surrounding what the pioneers went through to ensure their farms were maintained all year round. Each season brought on new jobs that had to be completed and everyone in the family played an important role, even the children.

Here is a breakdown of each season which should aid in the images drawn on the page and the written responses.

Spring:  fields were plowed with the help of oxen or horses that carried/dragged a big tool called a plow. Seed were also planted at this time (often, pioneers brought their seeds from  Europe.

Summer: Farmers would have to weed and water their crops and gardens daily.  They also had to continue plowing fields to expand their current acreage in order to keep their free land.

Fall:  families started harvesting their crops in prepartion for winter (harvest = gather).  They would have to store their crops in their cellars (holes dug in the ground), or perserve them using various methods such as canning, pickling, salting and drying. They would also have to gather a lot of hay in order to feed the livestock over the winter months.

Winter: families spent a lot of time indoors, fixing and cleaning tools, mending and making clothes, sewing quilts, making candles or soap and visiting with nearby neighbours.

Churches of the Past and Present

Today our hot topic in Social Studies was Churches In the 19th Century. With much rich discussion about the various churches we have here in Canada today, we created a diagram similar to the one below comparing the two.

Friday's Reminders

  • Spelling Test
  • 2 Spelling activities are due
  • Rounding math activity is due
  • Our first primary assembly in the afternoon (Panther awards to be distributed!)
  • Ticket Draw
  • Monday is Thanskgiving...No School!

Tonight's Math Homework

Today we focused on rounding numbers to the nearest ten. We did a number of examples together and most are feeling confident in their ability to round. Next, we used adding equations to round even more.
We learned that estimating is an educated guess and we can estimate a sum (total) by rounding numbers.  This also makes adding larger numbers easier. Tonight most are bringing home a white practice sheet that has these questions below written in on the reverse.  This sheet is due tomorrow!

This week's very SHY ticket winners!

Congratulations to Hailey and Anisha!!

Blacksmith from The Pioneer Times

Among the various occupations during the 1800's were the Blacksmith, one of the more important jobs within a pioneer community. Here are some things we learned about the Blacksmiths yesterday:

Blacksmiths...
- were in every town - often there were more than one, depending on the size and population of the town.
- made and fixed tools made of metal or iron (e.x. utensils, horseshoes, wheels, etc)
- used very hot fire to help mold their tools (white-hot = liquid, yellow-hot=moldable, red-hot=poundable)
- never stopped a project until it was done
- would need certain tools to do their job: an apron, an anvil, a hammer and tongs
- had young apprentices
- took very short breaks and were very busy
- took on the job of the dentist if one wasn't present in the community.

Pioneer Homework

Tonight, many students are bringing home a pink sheet. We discussed pioneer schools and have been comparing them to our modern day schools.
Some may have put in enough points during their class time and weren't asked to take it home for homework. Others had more to do.  This is to be brought back for discussion tomorrow and a ticket.
