Let's all go to the Theatre!

We have been invited to see a show at the Young Peoples Theatre in a couple weeks.  The permission form in green is coming home today. Due date for fee and form is Wednesday, May 6.

Photosynthesis

Now that our plants are starting to grow, we had to figure out how they are going to continue to thrive. We did some comparisons between plants and animals and between humans and plants and discovered that we all need some of the same things.  But what is interesting is that plants can't go around hunting for and gathering their food like animals and humans because they are anchored in place by their roots.  It is fascinating to learn that plants make their own food through a process called photosynthesis.  The video below goes into quite some depth.  All we need to know are the basics:



sunlight + water + carbon dioxide = sugar (food) + oxygen

Math Homework

Tonight, not everyone is bringing home their $$ math homework.  Some worked very efficiently this morning and were able to complete theirs in class. It is due tomorrow.

EQAO INFO

Ok folks, it's time to get informed.
Although I have not been given an exact date for the test writing, I assume it will be during the last week of May or the first week in June. Stay tuned.

Our writing schedule will likely look something like this:
Tues - language am + language pm
Wed - Math - am only
Thurs - Language am + language pm

During the test week, there is no formal instruction time (except on the Monday).
Students are given long blocks of time to complete their books. Usually most finish in good time and once everyone is finished, we will have some peaceful time to play and relax.

Throughout the year, I have tied in sample test questions to each unit, specifically in math. As a result, the grade 3's have a good/clear understanding of the test question format and how they can achieve the various levels, 1-4.

Usually at this point in the year, I ask parents to help out a little by exposing their child a little more to the EQAO questions.  Many years of booklets are available on-line as well as the scoring guides for each question.  I've included a link below which will take parents to the page with tests from previous years.  Once on the page, scroll down until you see the 'years' - They go as far back as 2009.  After clicking on a year, look for the box that has released assessments questions.

In the coming weeks, expect a heavier load of homework coming home.  If no homework comes home, please use this time to visit the site and do some practice questions.

After 4 days of germination and watching amazing things happen, we planted our flower seeds and beans so they can start getting the nutrients they need.

I'm so sorry to have not posted these sooner. These 6 recipients have done nothing but amazing things since day one. They work hard, behave well, and are simply put, a breath of fresh air. Congratulations you 6, for being quite outstanding individuals.

Get those juices flowing...

Our next journey into writing will take us into personal narratives (stories). The purpose of this writing is for students to tap into an event, or experiences that they have vivid memories about.

Students will write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.  Tonight it will be important for everyone to brainstorm their ideas and focus in on one event that is truly meaningful to them.  Bring ideas to class tomorrow!

Temperature test

We had our temperature test this morning. It has been marked and given back. Please sign and review and return.
Some who need a little extra pratice with temperature did not bring their test back today. They will get some more time work work with it and another chance to write.

Spelling assignment

This week, everyone was given a grid paper on which they will create their plant wordsearch with this week's word list. This is due Friday! 

Germination time!

Today we  started to germinate some beans and sunflowers....let's hope we see some tails emerging tomorrow. All they need is some water and warmth. Fingers crossed!

The celery stalk experiment...

Will they remain green or will they change?...we'll find out if the stems function is really to carry water to the rest of the plant. Stay tuned!

Homework Tonight...

Money will be the focus for the next little while.  Please use this as an opportunity to be counting change at home, adding up totals at the grocery store, figuring out the change...and basically making meaningful connections to the world. Tonight's math homework is due tomorrow!

BRING YOUR BOOKS!

Tomorrow is our library period.  Very few have been bringing their books back for this time slot.  PLEASE remember to bring them back so we can make proper use of our time.  Thanks a bunch!

Please start collecting!

In a short while we will start a unit on capacity and mass. To aid in the delivery of this unit, please start to put aside clean, empty food containers.  We are looking specifically for anything that indicates the grams (g), kilograms (kg), millilitres (mL) and Liters (L)

Reminder - Scholastic catalogues were sent home a few weeks ago.  The original due date was... yesterday..oops!  I will extend the due date for this Friday, 18th. 

Temperature Homework..

Coming home tonight is a large page dedicated to reading the thermometer and identifying benchmarks for certain temps.  It is due tomorrow.
TIP: These benchmarks (freezing, boiling, body temp, room temp, etc) are important and everyone will be required to know them for testing.  

Wrapping up and Movin on...

This week we finished our geometry (shapes) unit and are moving on to temperature. Temperature is a fairly easy concept and we will be spending a very short time spent on it.  We will tie in probability to temperature and then will get right into Money before the end of next week.
A shapes test and quiz will be coming home tomorrow for review and signing.  Please look for it!

Minute to win it challenge...

To add to our Friday Fun Day, we played the famous game Minute to Win It!  A variety of challenges we put together and students raced against the clock to complete them.  Stacking cups was one, but I think it was TOO easy. Next time, we will stack with only ONE hand...our NON dominant one.  HA HA HA HAAAAaaaaaa!!! 

New spelling list - pioneer vocab

Our regular spelling program has come to an end. From here until mid June I will still be giving weekly words. This week, the focus is Pioneer vocabulary.  There are 2 activities associated with this list.  Number 1, definitions are to be provided for each.  Online dictionaries can be used for this purpose.  Number 2, each word is to be placed in a sentence.  This work is done on separate pieces of lined paper which have already been provided.  These spelling sheets are due next Friday, as usual.

Mathematicians in the Making!

These kids (Mojiz, Mahad, Arjun, Abby, Rowan, Irie, Alexia, Monica and Mahira) have been working hard practicing their math skills in preparation for their upcoming math contest challenge this Month! nice job guys and good luck to you!

Friday Fun Day

If you were a fly on the wall this morning you would see grade 3's working hard to construct their 3d figures...quiet, friendly chatter, and oldies music in the background.

Things started to shape up...

There was frustration, success, tears...oh yes...that's right. Tears. Geez  Louise. 
But in the end, the tough ones persevered and some others gave up. PRISMS Proved to be most challenging which is why there is an abundance of PYRAMIDS!
Regardless, I believe it's safe to say, we all know the difference between the two. Well done grade 3's!

International Day of PINK

Tomorrow (Wednesday, 8 April 2015) is International Day of Pink – Remember to Wear Pink!

The International Day of Pink is a day of action, born when a youth in a high school in Cambridge, Nova Scotia was bullied because he wore a pink shirt to school. His fellow students decided to stand up to bullying; and hundreds of students came to school wearing pink to show support for diversity and stopping discrimination, gender-based bullying, homophobia and transphobia.

 

Across the world discrimination continues to be the leading source of conflict. Discrimination includes ableism, ageism, classism, heterosexism, homophobia, racism, sexism, transphobia, among many other forms. Stereotypes (ideas) may lead to prejudices (attitudes/feelings) which may lead to discrimination (actions) and affect how we work, study and treat one another; they create barriers, bullying, harassment, hate and violence.

The International Day of Pink is more than just a symbol of a shared belief in celebrating diversity - it's also a commitment to being open minded, to being understanding of differences and to learning to respect each other.
