Year at a Glance...Curriculum Plans

Today in the red folder you should find a hard copy of my grade 3 plans for the year. These would have been distributed at Curriculum Night, had there been one. There are two terms.  1st term runs from September until the end of January and 2nd term runs from February - June.
There should be no changes to anticipate upon my departure for maternity leave, however the new teacher will inform you in the event that there are.

Patterning Math Test

This morning we wrote our first math test. I am hoping to have them marked and returned today.  Please check your child's red folder. Review, discuss and sign where indicated and send it back tomorrow.  We are now moving on to Numeracy and Number Sense and will begin with the place value chart.   Homework regarding this concept will be coming home this week.

Those students joining us from Mrs. Hawkins class may be asked to write the patterning test at some point this week.  I will collaborate with Mrs. Hawkins to get a better idea as to what has been covered this far.

Recorders...

Every day 5, our class has music after lunch. The recorder is required during this time. Please ensure it is coming to school on every day 5 so you can participate fully with the music teacher.

Welcome New Grade 3's!

Today, as part of the Clairlea re-organization, we have been joined by 4 new students.
There will be lots for them to learn and get adjusted to as we are well into the year in many different areas, but we will do our best to help them along the way and make them feel as comfortable and as welcome as possible.
Our new joiners are:
Hailey, Daniel, Sankavi and Julia!
Stay tuned for their wacky picture transformations!

Patterning Homework

Tonight's homework is coming home in the little math booklet.
1 question has been pasted into the first page.
Everyone is expected to work out the problem and describe their solution.
Before beginning the work, I would like to advise that they make a list of the information they know that will help them to solve the problem.  They should also make a list of all the things they need to find out in order to answer the question.
This booklet will be due tomorrow...along with the Health assignment from Monday.
Tickets will be awarded to those who bring in their homework!

Food Groups Homework

Students can use this coloured image to complete the homework that is due Wednesday, September 12.

Spelling Program

Our spelling program has begun!
Every Friday a new list of words are written into the agenda.  See page 25 for this weeks list of HOMOPHONES.
Students are given 1 week to study the words at home, and complete a spelling activity or two.
This week, the spelling activity is to put every word into a sentence. A spelling booklet has been provided for this homework. Students are expected to return the spelling book on Fridays and come prepared to write their test on that day was well. Tests will be returned the same day. Perfect scores are recored on a class chart and those students with the most perfect scores at the end of the year will be treated to Dairy Queen for an ice cream.  Every week, I will also post the words and homework here on the blog. Don't FORGET!

Tomorrow we will be getting our first spelling list.  The AGENDA is required for this.  Please don't forget to bring it to school.
Also, the yellow envelop containing TDSB forms is due along with $6 for the agenda.  Thank you to all who have submitted these items already. And as usual, please ensure the red homework folder and the homework that is due comes back as well!

Math and Writing Homework

There is homework coming home tonight that reflects today's lesson on PATTERNING with NUMBERS.
This was part of last nights homework and the majority of students needed a refresher.
So, tonight please make sure that the example in the homework is reviewed and the steps taken are applied in questions 1-4. This will be corrected tomorrow.

As well, today we started writing 'detailed' sentences (sentences that come to life!).  Some students finished it in class during 15 minutes of free time, others chose to take it home to finish it.  Six words were provided. RECESS, CHILDREN, HAIR, HOUSE, NOVEMBER and STARS. Everyone needs to write a 'simple' sentence for each word, followed by a detailed sentence for the same word.  This is due tomorrow as well!

Paper Bag Activity

Half of the class will be presenting the contents of their paper bag tomorrow and the other half on Friday. Everyone wrote their personal due date on their bag so there should be no confusion.  I'm looking forward to learning more about everyone!

Math Homework

Today we began exploring patterns, specifically the various attributes that can be changing in repeating patterns. A pattern always has a rule (also referred to as the core, that repeats over and over). By using each other to make patterns, we discovered the more common changing attributes can be colour, size, shape, pattern (within the shape) and orientation (which means the position or direction of the shape).  Tonight's homework reflects a little of what we did in class today, and a little bit of the material covered in grade 2  (patterns with numbers).  There are 2 double sided sheets that are due back tomorrow. One was started today but we ran out of time to complete it. We will be correcting our work in class and students will also be rewarded with tickets for bringing back their work.

Class of 2013? 1980? 1950? You decide...

First Day "Stuff"

I'd like to start off by saying thank you to all the families who showed their support by helping their child come prepared for the first day. I am so pleased with the response to the summer letter.
We had an incredible first day!  Lot's of talking on my behalf, and probably more of the same tomorrow.  I've already learned a lot about the children and am looking forward to the next couple months.

In your childs' bag are some items that can be discussed over dinner.
-The Agenda was given out with the understanding that $6 will come in tomorrow or by the end of the week. The agenda is expected to come to school everyday. It should be kept in the bag.
-The school calendar is coming home and can be kept there for families to refer to over the next 10 months!
-A RED homework/notes folder is coming home. This contains some homework that is due towards the end of the week (see brown paper bag and its contents). This folder also is expected to be at school EVERYDAY!
-A large YELLOW envelope containing all the necessary permission forms required by the TDSB is also in the bag. Please read, sign in all the necessary spots indicated and return to me ASAP!

I believe that is all for today. Please remember to check in everyday for more updates!

Grade 3 - 2012-2013

Thank you for seeking out our class blog!  This will be your first of many trips to this site and I hope you find it useful. Visiting the site daily will be a good idea for you, so make it easy on yourself and place it in your "favourites". I welcome comments of all kinds including suggestions on how to make the blog better. Don't be shy.

Tuesday, September 4th marks the first day of the 2012/2013 school year. By now, students assigned to my class should have received my summer welcome letter. I am hopeful that everyone will come prepared on the first day with the necessary tools indicated in the letter so that we can have a smooth transition into the school year. As mentioned in the letter, I will be provinding school supplies but those wishing to purchase their own are free to do so. Just ensure they are not items that will be a distraction during working periods. I am really looking forward to meeting each and everyone one of my new students are their families. Hope to see you all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed on Tuesday morning!
