Christmas Brunch

The holidays are quickly approaching, and we will be celebrating with a holiday brunch on Friday!
All those who did not contribute to our Halloween goodie table will have an opportunity to for this upcoming event.  All those students have selected a food item to bring and hopefully this will eleviate an abundance of any one item. Thank you in advance to everyone for contributing...it's going to be great! Because we will be eating around 10 am,  only a small breakfast will be necessary and I don't feel that packing a lunch will at all be required. In addition to the fruit, muffins, toast etc, I will be serving hot oatmeal and toasted bagels with cream cheese.
Can't wait!

Math homework

This week we started data management in math. We are specifically focusing on the interpretation of data in tables and charts. Tonight's homework is a double sided worksheet and is due tomorrow. Two...maybe three...or perhaps four tickets! You'll just have to do your homework to find out!

Social studies homework

Today we discussed our various modes of transportation. We discussed how we travel to school and how the other people of the world may travel to their job. Our assignment is to address a  hypothetical situation. ALL MODES OF TRANSPORTATION HAVE STOPPED WORKING!  Students need to answer how this may affect them personally, and how it may affect others in their community. This is due tomorrow. Tickets ticket stickers!

Math Contest Details...In case you were wondering...

I cannot provide too many details, but hopeful the little info below will shed some light on the situation:
- Participants were offered a spot in the competition if they receive B+'s or higher in all math areas
- There will be 3 practice tests which will take place at various times between now and April
- The first practice test took place last week
- All of these practice tests will be written in our school gym over a lunch hour
- There will also be 1 take home practice test - a total of 4 practice tests
- All tests will be reviewed/scored by teachers from our school.
- Once marked, students will get to review and correct their tests with the teachers
- All future practice test writing dates are undetermined
- Look for blog posts for future practice test dates and test correction dates
- The first test will not be marked unit after the holidays
- There is no studying that can take place at this time

If you have further questions, please direct them to the teacher in charge:  Mr.Landry

louis.landry@tdsb.on.ca

Hope this helps!

A 2nd Box was required!

That's right people! We needed to pursue a 2nd box for our food drive donations.  This is great news. However, we've only had 9 generous donators.  NINE! There are 21 people in our class...I think we can do better.  One non-perishable food item is all we need from each individual.  Dig deep guys...deep into those dark corners of your cabinets and grab that can of mushroom soup that has been neglected for months..maybe years. Some lucky soul would be so grateful for that can of soup.
Please Donate!

Holiday Candy Grams for sale!

Students are invited to buy candy grams for $1 starting tomorrow!
How it works: bring in $1 or more to buy your friends a bag of sweets for the holidays.  Next week, these bags of sweets will be delivered to students by our Student Leadership Team (SLT).  All funds raised will go to various math and language initiatives around the school. Thanks for your support!

Tonights' Homework - Social Studies

Everyone is asked to visit the sites listed below to plan a fantasy day for themselves in Niagara Falls, keeping in mind they can only spend $100.  A worksheet is coming home and the only question that needs to be answered is the first one. The following two will be discussed in more depth tomorrow and they will be answered at that time.  Please make sure this is brought back tomorrow to share with all and to receive 2 tickets!

EPIC FAIL!

So, the intentions were good, but the connection was terrible!
How much time did we spend logging in and setting things up, you ask?
Oh, only 1.5hrs.  Once we had 90% of the laptops working, our internet connection was so weak that we had to abandon the whole thing...so disappointing.  We set ourselves up to be disappointed with a slow loading computers and couple glitches but this was MOST frustrating. An entire morning wasted.  Thanks to all those who spent some time reading through the websites last night.  Hopefully we'll be able to find an alternate method of doing our Niagara Falls research.

Descriptive writing

We chose a tasty treat and we studied it. We felt it, tasted it, smelled it and listened to it as we took little bites.  Then we wrote. Here are a few noteworthy pieces. Enjoy!

Surfing the Web

Tonight's homework will require everyone to have access to the Internet. In our social studies unit we are discussing tourism with a focus this week on Niagara Falls.  As part of a mini project we are starting tomorrow, everyone will need to get familiar with the Websites below. The project will require students to create a fantasy day in Niagara Falls.  They will have $100 to spend and will need to choose the attractions that they will visit. Tomorrow we will be using lap tops to navigate through the sites - a head start on getting to know the sites will be very beneficial.

Our Fabulous Parent Council is running a raffle for a chance to take home an award winning Gingerbread House!
See Details below.

Our Tree of Empathy

As part of an initiative headed by Ms.Purvis (my idol), we are creating a Tree of Empathy here at Clairlea.  The tree symbolizes each students commitment to being a better, more empathic person. We took an oath and sealed the deal with a coloured thumbprint.  At the end of the project, over 600 thumbprints will have been placed on the Tree of Empathy.  Here's to new and great things at Clairlea!! Thank you to Ms. Purvis for the creative and worthy idea.

Spelling Test and Homework

This is just a reminder that due to our PA day this Friday, we will be writing our spelling test tomorrow and homework is due at that time as well.

Tonight a 2-sided sheet is coming home. The front is very straight forward, the back is where is get's interesting.
In writing these days, we have been focused on DESCRIPTIVE writing...making our writing pieces come alive! (Stay tuned for our latest creations).
We are working on using more details to describe different things and places...we try to use our 5 senses to assist with out descriptions. Tonight, students should be referring back to our Success Criteria for descriptive writing (see below). This homework is due tomorrow.

Everyone's a WINNER these days!!
